Sounds of Mu is a Soviet and Russian rock band formed in the early 1980s by Pyotr Mamonov. The band's songs are dominated by household themes, while the sound has constantly changed, affecting such areas as experimental rock (1983-1987), psychedelic rock (1988-1991), postpunk (1993-1997) and lo-fi (1998-2005) in different periods. The group repeatedly changed its line-ups (up to one Mamonov), broke up several times and was assembled by Mamonov. The last album of the Mamonov project was dated 2005, after which the Sounds of Mu project ceased to exist. Ten years later, in 2015, Mamonov announced the formation of the band "Brand new Sounds of Mu". The genre orientation of the band cannot be precisely defined, their music contains elements of postpunk, electropop, and new wave. The melodica is extremely stingy: almost all the tunes rely on one rhythmic and intonational formula - the tonic third of a minor, however, melos' laconism is compensated by the timbre of the voice, the richest "video sequence" of stage performance and unconventional arrangements (a mixture of whimsicality and original primitive). All compositions are distinguished by atypical drama: the couplet form seems to explode from within with a sharp dynamic contrast — either on the verge of the chorus or in one of the stanzas. Mamonov used a peculiar musical language on stage, which manifested all kinds of sound techniques: from homeric cacophonies and persistent primitivism to elegant, pure neoclassical melodies. Each song is a kind of performance, the hero of which is a personality standing on the "sidelines of life", far from the privileges of the nouveau riche of politics and art. Mamonov's stage persona is that of a fool, an "urban lunatic" who resembles a buffoon in his gestures, body movements, and dancing. As noted in the first encyclopedia of Soviet rock, in the traditions of the Old Russian laughing culture, Mamonov demonstrates to society the inside of human life.
