The album “The Beastly Abyss Will Kill You” by the band “Varvar” is most often cited as a 1994 release (although sometimes it’s mentioned as 1993 — probably due to the recording date). This is the band’s debut record, which became a cult classic among fans of heavy music and a rare find for collectors.

The album contains 8 tracks with deliberately gloomy, apocalyptic titles such as “The Sodom’s Noose on the Neck of Rus’”, “War for Jerusalem”, “In the Claws of the Beast”. Anatoly Stepanov’s lyrics are filled with religious and eschatological imagery, which contrasts with the aggressive delivery.

In terms of sound, it’s heavy metal with speed metal elements: dense riffs, harsh guitar parts, energetic drums, and hoarse vocals in the spirit of classic hard rock and early metal. The sound is deliberately “raw,” with a noticeable degree of analog roughness — in the spirit of underground releases from the early 90s.

The record was released on vinyl (label Music Land) and later reissued in various formats, including limited editions; the original is considered a rarity today.
